Branding on the Navasota Ranch is a combination of Rex and DCC. The crew gets to rope the calves, drag them to the branding pot and wrestle them like we did at the Rex, but they mark them like they do at DCC (by cutting of a chunk of ear) and try as he might, Jason hasn’t convinced his crew to run more than 120 head in a herd, so there isn’t a need for more than 7 guys at the branding because we’re only branding 120 head of calves a day. Of course, this is only our first year. Hopefully everyone will see how they can improve and implement the changes. Although, feeding a crew of 7 sure takes less time than feeding the crews at a Rex branding. It is sad not to see the Hip-O or the crown brands of the Rex, but the beehive and the HT will serve the purpose just as well I suppose.
