We weaned early this year because of the drought. We fence-line wean, which means instead of locking the calves in the corral and moving the cows a ways off, we put the calves across the fence from the cows for a few days so they can still find each other. By the third day both the cows and calves are usually settled and grazing instead of pacing the fence. The calves tend to fare a little better and not get as sick because it is less stressful. But you always have a couple of calves crawl through the fence and that is what has happened in these pictures. Jason had to rope it and drag it back in with the calves.

Fire Within
Instead of looking forward to thunderstorms, this year we dread them. It’s so dry the rain evaporates before it hits the ground and we just get the dry lightning. There have been so many fires this year. Thankfully there haven’t been any on the Joy (yet), but they have happened all around. The setting sun gave the appearance of a fire in the sky as this storm headed east.

Birthday Baby
We have a one year old again! Riggin’s birthday was yesterday. He loved opening his presents and screamed at Dallie when she touched any of his new things.
We think he must be over his milk protein intolerance because we now feed him whatever we are having (ice cream birthday cake) and he doesn’t seem to be bothered. His one year check up is on Monday and hopefully the doctor will give us the go-ahead for cow’s milk.

Stock Tank Swimming
The kids spent many hours in our little swimming pool this summer. I was glad we brought it into the yard.

Out With Dad
We’ve finally had a cool off this week. It’s been such a relief. We even needed jackets when we went out to check cows and move a solar the other day.
