Calving season is nearly upon us. We are calving heifers again this year. Vet students come in less that two weeks. And we are not ready. Jason’s been mending corals, I’ve been browning hamburger. He still needs to put his vet room together, as well as other things, and I still have 30 pounds of hamburger to brown, as well as other things. There’s always some anxiety and dread at this point, knowing it’s going to be six weeks of exhaustion and hard work and we wonder how we are going to survive. And then it’s branding season and AI after that and the major work doesn’t seem to slow down until the following February. But we can’t help but be excited when we see the first calf on the ground. He’s a cute little guy – little being the operative word. Only 40 pounds, premature, but he’s keeping up with his mom and doing surprisingly well.
And now the excitement has past. But it will return in less than two months when we’re down to our last 20 head to calve. Mid May can’t come soon enough.

How cute. Gotta love the first few, well all of them are so cute when they are born. We didn't get a single one today. Then they'll all come at once.
